Buying a property in MILFORD HAVEN with FBM Estate Agents.
From the setting of a Shakespeare play to plaudits from both Daniel Defoe to Lord Nelson Milford Haven has certainly earned its share of tributes over the years.
One of the deepest natural harbours in the world, the 22 miles of sheltered Haven has welcomed visitors from around the world into its safe harbour for many years as well as playing host to Vikings, as a launch site for Henry II to invade Ireland and as home for 1,000 American troops during the 2nd World War. The town itself grew around its trade around the sea; first as a whaling centre and then its development into an internationally renowned fishing port. Nowadays it is more likely to host a visiting cruise liner than a Viking long boat. The oil and gas industries have taken advantage of the geography of the Haven since the early 1960’s. Today both industry and fishing play a much smaller part than in the past with the once bustling harbour having been developed into a 150-berth marina complex making it an ideal place in Pembrokeshire for dining, drinking and shopping. However, don’t be disheartened the docks still have a beating heart with fish processing as well as a smoke house in operation.
A great deal of money was ploughed into Milford Haven from the late 1700s including the building of churches of all denominations which are still worshipped in today to schooling, bridges and merchant houses as well as being the first town in Wales to be electrified.
All this history means that Milford Haven has all types of properties. From traditional terraces to fisherman’s cottages gathered around small inlets off the Haven to the grander town houses that still boast all their original charm and character to those properties built solely around the views and those now available due to the development of the marina or adaptation of character properties.
The town boasts the award winning Torch Theatre, a vibrant centre of the arts which includes a 2-screen cinema and café, a town museum which is located in the oldest building in the town, a former bonded customs store, a bowling alley and children’s activity centre located at Phoenix Bowl on the harbour side or if you are not feeling so energetic a leisurely stroll around the marina taking in the working and pleasure craft on display is a must. There are commercial craft available for both pleasure cruises and fishing trips and you may well be in luck if an historic vessel is in port. Outdoor activities include a network of cycle routes taking in the coast as well as moving further in-land taking in picturesque countryside as well as a local golf course .
Schooling is available at all levels within the town and transport links include a railway station, and regular local and national bus services. Milford Haven has its fair share of national names in banking and retail sectors as well as facilities such as doctors and dentists.
Villages surrounding Milford Haven vary greatly from those with access onto the foreshore at such places as Dale and Burton to those even slightly in-land that are surrounded by the green fields. Both the fields and water that we treasure are able to provide us with the local produce that is relished by locals and visitors alike.
There is nothing quite like a pint of prawns or a bowl of Pembrokeshire new potatoes watching pleasure craft and people alike utilising the Haven that makes Milford so special.
